Some Traditions Don’t Begin as Traditions

Every summer I bought two purple salvias. Not because they were beautiful, although they were, but because the hummingbirds loved them.

Year after year they grew into overflowing pots that buzzed with tiny wings from sunrise until dusk.

This spring was different. The only plants I could find were small, tired-looking salvias that seemed to have already lost their fight before they came home.

I’ve caught myself wondering if the hummingbirds will even find us this year.

But then I remembered something nature has been teaching me for years.

Most things worth waiting for don’t arrive because everything is perfect. They arrive because someone kept showing up.

Maybe the hummingbirds are still out there, following routes they’ve flown for generations. Maybe all these little plants need is a little more time before they become the welcoming sign they’ve always been.

Until then, I’ll keep watering.

Sometimes hope looks a lot like tending something before there’s any evidence it will return.
