There are some visitors you expect.
The goose families arrive each morning, making their way from the puddle to the grass, the cracked corn, and whatever birdseed has found its way beneath the feeders.
And then there is one.
Our lone goose.
Almost like clockwork, it arrived again today.
It has become part of its daily routine now. It walks through the yard with quiet confidence, stopping at the pans, browsing beneath the feeders, and making its familiar rounds. It no longer seems concerned that I’m sitting on the patio watching. We simply share the same space for a little while.
Trust doesn’t usually arrive all at once.
It grows through consistency.
The same place.
The same quiet presence.
The same understanding that neither one of us is asking anything of the other.
Over time, caution becomes curiosity.
Curiosity becomes familiarity.
And familiarity becomes trust.
I don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Perhaps one day this goose won’t come anymore. That’s the way nature has always been, visitors arrive, seasons change, and every encounter is temporary.
But today, it came.
And today, that was enough.
Some of the greatest joys in life don’t come from owning something or holding onto it forever.
Sometimes they come from simply being the kind of place that another living creature chooses to visit again.
