Apparently, the Puddle wasn’t finished with today’s story.
By afternoon, the birds were back. They gathered around the feeder again, several sharing the little rim at once, while another found its own place beside the running water of the fountain. The quiet little bird neighborhood I had noticed missing this morning had simply been somewhere else for a while.
And maybe that is the better lesson.
This morning I wrote about the ones who still show up. By afternoon, I was reminded not to decide too quickly that the others have gone.
Sometimes absence is only absence for now. Sometimes the quiet is just the space between visits. Sometimes we are standing in the middle of a story trying to understand the ending when the next part simply hasn’t arrived yet.
The Lone Goose was enough this morning. And the birds came back this afternoon.
