Piper has fresh water just inside the door, maybe six feet from where she was standing. Clean water. Easy water. Water placed there specifically for her and Harper.
Apparently, none of that matters when there is a fountain available.
I caught her quietly helping herself today, standing beside the rocks and drinking straight from the little stream of water meant for the birds. She did not look confused or particularly sneaky once she got there. She looked like she had simply made a perfectly reasonable decision.
The fountain has already become one of those places that seems to invite whoever happens to wander close enough. Birds stop there. A toad recently decided it had seating. And now Piper has determined that the neighborhood watering hole extends to dogs too.
Maybe that is part of what I love about this little space. Nothing here seems to belong entirely to one purpose anymore. The bird feeder feeds more than birds, the puddle belongs to whoever needs it that day, and apparently the fountain has no species restrictions.
If it’s good enough for the birds, Piper figures it is good enough for her. And looking at her standing there so contentedly, I am not sure I can argue with that.
