Stella or Stanley stopped by today, although not in the usual place where I have gotten used to watching them. With the water continuing to shrink, our visitor was farther up the puddle, standing among the green surface and tall vegetation where there is apparently still enough of whatever a heron needs.
It was good to see one of them at all. As the puddle changes, I have wondered how much longer our summer visitors will continue to find a reason to stay. Maybe they haven’t left yet. Maybe I just have to look a little farther than I used to.
Hopefully we will get some rain soon and put a little more water back into the puddle. Not because Stella or Stanley seems particularly concerned about my preferred viewing location, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if it brought them back down closer to the patio for whatever remains of their season here.
For now, though, I will take farther up the puddle.
They’re still here. And right now, that is enough.
