Yesterday I was looking across the puddle and commenting on just how low the water had become. The taller vegetation was beginning to stretch farther into the open water, and I found myself hoping we would get enough rain to give the puddle a little help.
Apparently, the puddle was listening.
By this morning, the rain gauge showed that we had received a little over two inches of rain. It was not enough to cover all of the taller vegetation or return the puddle to what it looked like earlier in the summer, but it was enough to add some much-needed water.
The difference is subtle, but noticeable. There is a little more open water between the patches of vegetation, a little more reflection on the surface, and the puddle looks just a bit less tired than it did yesterday.
I suppose there is a small lesson tucked into that, too. Sometimes what we hope for arrives without completely changing the circumstances. It does not erase what came before or immediately restore everything to the way it once was.
Sometimes it simply adds enough.
Enough water to make a difference. Enough rain to remind us that the season is still moving. Enough change to notice when we look again.
And today, for the puddle, that seems like plenty.
