A Surprise Visit

Today the phone rang.

It was Tyler asking if Hollyn’s exchange could happen here.

There wasn’t even a moment to think about it.

“Absolutely.”

Sometimes you don’t need hours together. Sometimes you just need a few unexpected minutes.

The patio has quickly become more than a place to watch the puddle. It has become a place where life simply happens. Family comes and goes. Conversations begin and end. The dogs welcome everyone as though they’ve been waiting all day.

Piper climbed right beside Hollyn, looking at her with the kind of love only a dog seems to know how to give. No questions. No expectations. Just, “You’re here, and that’s enough.”

Caitlin reached over to pet her too, and for a little while everyone shared the same quiet space.

There wasn’t a special event.
No celebration.
No big plans.

Just a surprise visit.

The older I get, the more I realize these ordinary moments are often the ones that stay with us the longest. They aren’t planned. They don’t make the calendar.

They simply become part of the story of a home.

Today reminded me that sometimes the greatest gift isn’t having more time.

It’s being the place where time, however brief, feels safe enough to simply be together.
