Pinecone’s Priorities

Today, Pinecone paid another visit.

I had finally bought squirrel food, thinking it would be a welcome treat. After all, if you’re going to have a regular visitor, it seems only right to offer something chosen especially for them.

Pinecone had other ideas.

Without so much as a glance at the squirrel food, Pinecone headed straight for the woodpecker suet log, performing impressive acrobatics to reach every last bite.

It made me laugh.

Sometimes we spend so much time deciding what someone should want that we forget to pay attention to what they actually choose.

The wildlife around the puddle reminds me of that over and over again. The geese have their favorite paths. The crows keep their distance. The purple martins fill the sky. And Pinecone? Pinecone apparently believes the best meal is worth a little extra work.

I suppose that’s true for people, too.

We can prepare something with the best intentions, but everyone has their own preferences, comforts, and reasons. Watching instead of assuming often teaches us far more than planning ever could.

Besides… I have a feeling that squirrel food may end up being for someone else, while Pinecone continues to insist that the “woodpecker restaurant” serves the better menu.
